About the Dena Miskel:
Dena Miskel is an award-winning quilter, longarm artist, and pattern designer from Somis, California. She has been quilting for more than 40 years and has spent the last several years specializing in custom longarm quilting that blends traditional piecing with highly detailed, heirloom-quality quilting. Her work has been recognized at major national quilt shows, including AQS Paducah, AQS Branson, Houston International Quilt Festival, and Pacific International Quilt Festival.
Dena is known for taking traditional quilt designs and giving them a fresh perspective through innovative quilting, thoughtful texture, and meticulous attention to detail. Her quilting style is a blend of techniques and inspiration gathered from many exceptionally talented quilting artists and teachers she has admired and learned from over the years. Rather than following a single style, she enjoys mixing ideas, adapting motifs, and creating quilting that is uniquely her own while honoring the artists who helped shape her journey.
About Rusty Jane:
Rusty Jane began as a Dear Jane quilt but quickly became something much more personal. Over the course of nearly three years, Dena reimagined the iconic design using rich rust-dyed fabrics, dramatic scalloped borders, and custom quilting created specifically to complement every block and border. The quilt also includes treasured buttons from her late mother’s collection, making it both a technical achievement and a deeply sentimental piece.
Since its completion, Rusty Jane has received numerous honors, including the Top Award for Traditional Design at AQS Branson, an Honorable Mention at AQS Paducah, Best Traditional Longarm Quilting at Pacific International Quilt Festival, publication in American Quilter magazine, and selection as the July quilt in the 2026 AQS Calendar.
The quilting designs in this collection were created directly from the motifs used throughout Rusty Jane. They are not exact reproductions of any one person’s style, but rather a collection of motifs that reflect Dena’s own quilting journey—a blend of inspiration, practice, and lessons learned from many talented artists over the years. She hopes these designs inspire others to enjoy the creative process and discover how thoughtful quilting can transform a beautiful quilt into a treasured heirloom
