Types of Edge to Edge (E2E) Digital Quilting Designs
Synonyms
- E2E
- An all over design
- End to end design
- Continuous line design
- Pantograph
E2E
An E2E design is repeated multiple times to cover one edge of the quilt to the other end of the quilt.
These generally start on the left, end on the right in the same horizontal plane. This puts it in position to start the next repeat so that the pattern can be tiled to run across an entire quilt.
EDGE-T0-EDGE INTERLOCKING DESIGNS
If an edge-to-edge design interlocks, the repeated rows are less obvious.
The repeated rows need to be nested together to some degree to make the space even between the rows.
EDGE-TO-EDGE (E2E) NON NESTING
These are patterns designed to be nestled together to make the repeats harder to see.
PROPERTIES
- Can be repeated to form rows of continuous line of stitching with one stop and one end.
- The start and end points are on the same horizontal plane.
TYPES of E2E (Edge to Edge)
- B2B
- P2P
- Borders and Corners
B2B (Border to Border)
- The start and end point at the outer most edges of the design.
- Usually, the start is on the left and end on the right.
- Both start and end points are on the same horizonal plane.
- Completely fills the space from top to bottom.
- Has similar consistency throughout the quilt.
- Fit cleanly inside the edges of a quilt or inside of borders of a quilt without any gaps.
- No interlock on any side of the design.
- Not much nesting is needed for rows.
- All B2B patterns are E2E, but not all E2E are B2B.
P2P (Point to Point)
- The start and end point at the outer most edges of the design.
- Has the start and stop points at the outer most edges of the design
- Usually, the start is on the left and end on the right.
- Both start and end points are on the same horizonal plane.
- No interlock on the sides
- May nest or interlock at top to bottom
- All P2P patterns are E2E, but not all E2E are P2P.
BUTT TO BEAK
- Specially designed for “Flying Geese Block”.
- Usually, the start is on the left and end on the right.
- Both start and end points are on the same horizonal plane.
BORDERS AND CORNERS
Borders: The framing on a quilt that serves to visually hold in the design and give the eye a stopping point.
- Borders are specially designed sets where there is a border unit and a border corner unit.
- The border is rotated 90 degrees to combine the two sections of the border.
- Combine them by rotating the border corners 90 degrees for the top and left sections. This is your “LEFT UNIT”
- For the bottom and right side, copy the entire “LEFT UNIT”, rotate 180 degrees, and fit it into the boundaries.
- Border units are either E2E or P2P.
- The corner unit is used to connect the outer edges of the border.
CONCATENATING PATTERNS
These are pattern sets designed to all start and end in the same location but can be used in an alternating placement. Each block is different, but they can be joined to run as a full row.
P2P Triangles
A P2P triangle is twice as wide as its height.
Point to Point Triangle patterns can be used in so many ways.
Can be used as a border, or an E2E.
Can be used as blocks as well.
